FAMILY DOLLAR UPDATE
BUILDING COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

A meeting was held on Thursday, July 12, 2012 as a result of the recent concerns raised in the building of the Family Dollar at the corners of Cascade Road and Boulevard Granada. Members in attendance were representatives from the Research and Mobilization Committees, Cascade Community Architectural Team, Audubon Forest, Adams Park, Atlanta City Council Members, Family Dollar and the Garrard Group. Even though there were some tough moments, there was a lively discussion, and overall the meeting was quite fruitful!
Both Family Dollar and the Garrard Group indicated that they were both surprised and not surprised that we were sitting at the table. They stated that they had met all requirements of the NC6 Ordinance and had worked hand in hand with the City’s Planning Department to ensure that all codes and specifications were met. They have undergone a very strict review since October 2011 and have not asked for variances in an effort to show their commitment to the project and what they thought were the communities’ wishes. They did not try to vary or deviate from the codes or the city’s requests.
They were not surprised that we were meeting because our reputations had preceded us. They knew we are communities who are involved and filled with history and traditions while wanting to be kept abreast of any new developments that come into the area.
The Garrard Group brought in a full color rendition of what the store has been slated to look like along with a full set of plans. The overall store design is contemporary. The building is all brick and they indicated that there are no visible burglar bars or metal components.
After much discussion from all involved parties, a list of concerns and recommendations were presented by the architectural team. Those concerns were about the building itself and Family Dollar’s day-to-day operations. The representatives from Family Dollar and the Garrard Group listened attentively and took notes as requests were being presented.
In terms of signage, the Garrard Group and our architectural design team reminded us that some designs are not permissible according to code regulations. We did hear them say that their team would get their consultants to come up with other designs given those restrictions, to meet the desires of the community.
Family Dollar representatives responded to concerns regarding day-to-day operations. These included overall maintenance, deliveries, dumpsters, the retention pond, and lighting. They will get back with us to address each concern in more detail after acquiring additional information.
Family Dollar representatives agreed to provide us with information about the corporation’s social responsibility and their policy. This will include procedures for seeking support for community based initiatives. Both parties did stress that they are interested in establishing a positive relationship with the communities.
At the end of the day, all parties shook hands while agreeing to stay in close contact as the project continues. Family Dollar and the Garrard Group reassured us that they would take each request under careful consideration and would let us know their decision as soon as possible. Please stay tuned. You will receive more detailed information about each request and the outcomes. This is just a brief overview to keep everyone informed as promised.
Thank you to Dr. Gerald Durley and the Providence Missionary Baptist Church for providing a pleasant and comfortable environment as ALL parties came together to talk business in the Cascade Community!
